Currents Magazine features Sunflower Soiree 2013

Exquisite event raises awareness and money for childhood brain tumor research.

The 6th annual Sunflower Soiree sold out with 450 supporters.  The benefit for Prayers from Maria, Children’s Glioma Cancer Foundation was held on the property of Colleen and Joel Schaedler in Rocky River.  The site is one of the most breathtaking on the lakefront – right on the bluff where the river and the lake converge.

Christy Kaprosy chaired the convivial evening that included cocktails, appetizers, a raffle, silent auction and a sit-down dinner.  This was no ordinary meal; it was a culinary spectacle!  Seven guest chefs from throughout the country prepared a feast featuring multiple courses.  They were Jesse Markko, Jeff Stanton, Stacey Poon-Kinney, Viet Pham, Rodney Henry, Chris Hodgson and Damaris Phillips.  The last five are current finalists on Food Network Star.  Rocco Whaler, chef/owner of Fahrenheit, and Jon Petz, speaker/author, served as emcees.

Dr. Mark Kieran, director of the pediatric neuro-oncology center at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston, was the guest speaker.  His specialty is in research into the development of new therapies for children with brain tumors.  A $100,000 grant from the Prayers from Maria Foundation resulted in the first breakthrough in many years.

Megan and Ed McNamara started the foundation in memory of their daughter, Maria, who died at age seven of the terminal brain tumor, known as a glioma.  As the first part of a two-day fundraiser, Sunflower Soiree exceeded $100,000.  The following day, an all day Wine Festival in Old Town River was attended by 4,000 people.
